Talk:Iraq History
From WikIraqi
Hello Laith, I just read your resumé of Iraqi history. I don't want to take you on آني ما أريد أتعرك وياك but I have something to add:
1. Iraq from Arabic 'areeq - very old. This is a bit too simple, I think. If you would watch different wikipedia articles about the etymology of the word Iraq, I would like to add that Uruk and Iraq are phonotically relatives in a sense (and it's often that a country is called after its capital or principal city like Algeria). Then we have this strange Kurdish word عيراق and last but not least the Old persian name for this country: Erag. These are just ideas and surely not a single one is the correct one.
2. You claim that Iraqi tribes were mostly Christians. Where did you get this ? Sources please (at least for me).
3. "resorted to military force when British interests were threatened, as in the 1941 Rashid Ali Al-Gaylani coup."
You should mention too, that this coup was a pro-Nazi coup (and the anti-Jewish measures were exercised in what is called now "Farhood"), the Third Reich and the USSR recognized this coup and German planes even started from Syria to support the coup. It was not merely the threat of British interests, these threats existed in pre-war times, too. And it was in British pre-war times that gave rise to people like Rashid Ali al-Gaylani. So a special hint to the general cirucumstances lacks, IMO. I don't deny that the Brits used force to support their interests, but the Rashid Ali Al-Gaylani coup is surely not an example for the falseness of this policy.
4. You mention 'British times' in Iraq which ended, to my knowledge, 14. Tammuz 58. You start to tell the history string at 79. What happened in the time between these dates ? I just ask, if you're busy, then I appologize for my lack of patience.
I hope you just take this as suggestions and not as critic for life and death from a grateful guest to your site.

Warda Gilgamish
I want to answer the Christian part first, When I compiled this information I used mostly encarta and Britanica, and some other sources, and i trully apologize because i did not keep the source, but my guess is Encarta.
About all the other questions, I wanted really to start the article not by copy paste from other sources, but from what i have compiled on my other site [www.FromBaghdadToNewYork.com], and make it a starting point for discussion and more valuable article, so please do not hesitate to correct anything i post here, I am of no level of knowledge as you are and thats very clear from your postings.
I also want you to know that this website is merly managed by me and I have no higher saying than you about it, its for everyoine who contrbute here, so please do not hesitate to attack my lack of knowledfge, because that way you are educating me, and I would appreciate that all the way.
best regards --Laith 15:15, 20 February 2007 (CST)
يااستاذ أرجوك
I made a first start but I want to know the editing tricks I asked you on the 'main site'( يوم طلعت روحي على مود هايه ), so it's your turn. I'm going to clean this site from blanks etc. and give some referential sources to it. MUCHAS GRACIAS Gilgamesh X 20:04, 2 March 2007 (CST)
Is this what you need?
Gilgamish, trust me i am no expert in wiki too, but i am good at figuring out thing i need, I looked at the table structure at the wiki and came up with this, please forgive me for the delay, i have been very busy lately.
let me know if this help
Width, height
The width and height of the whole table can be specified, as well as the height of a row. To specify the width of a column one can specify the width of an arbitrary cell in it. If the width is not specified for all columns, and/or the height is not specified for all rows, then there is some ambiguity, and the result depends on the browser.
Wiki markup
{| style="width:75%; height:200px" border="1"
|-
| abc || def || ghi
|- style="height:100px"
| jkl || style="width:200px" |mno || pqr
|-
| stu || vwx || yz
|}
What it looks like in your browser
abc def ghi jkl mno pqr stu vwx yz
Note that style="inline CSS" has no effect with some browsers. If compatibility is important, equivalent older constructs like width="75%" should work on more browsers.
Setting your column widths
If you wish to force column widths to your own requirements, rather than accepting the width of the widest text element in a column's cells, then follow this example. Note that wrap-around of text is forced.
{| border="1" cellpadding="2"
!width="50"|Name
!width="225"|Effect
!width="225"|Games Found In
|-
|Poké Ball || Regular Poké Ball || All Versions
|-
|Great Ball || Better than a Poké Ball || All Versions
|}
Name Effect Games Found In Poké Ball Regular Poké Ball All Versions Great Ball Better than a Poké Ball All Versions
To set column widths in a table without headers, specify the width in the first cell for each column, like this:
{| border="1" cellpadding="2"
|-
|width="100pt"|This column is 100 points wide
|width="200pt"|This column is 200 points wide
|width="300pt"|This column is 300 points wide
|-
|blah || blah || blah
|}
This column is 100 points wide This column is 200 points wide This column is 300 points wide blah blah blah
Yep, that's it !! Thanks a lot, I'm gonna clean up this article in these days, so it will look more properly. Anywhere, add this information here for other users on the Help site. Gilgamesh X 11:31, 3 March 2007 (CST)
Very Good
Guys this is a great discussion about Iraqi History that went into a technical question which is cool,, and Laith I do Agree with Gilgamesh on the many meanings of the word Iraq so maybe we can add all those... Also deer Mr. Laith, please find the source of the argument you put that 'Most Iraqi Tribes were Christian before Islam arrived in Iraq' and put the reference *"book / page or link and source / author"* there or remove it because like Gilgamesh, I raise the same concern. Gilgamesh, where/how do you have all this great knowledge about languages, thanks for the help, we really appreicate your entries and contribution, you rock. Akeel
some refrences
Akeel I answered this before if you read what i did
but here on of the sources and you can google the info to find more, Iraq: A Country Study
it dose not mean its right, its just a source. --Laith 19:31, 4 March 2007 (CST)
I looked in Wikipedia about this "Christian tribes in Iraq" and found this link which I'll add http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakhmids. Laith, I don't think, these facts are wrong but I just wanted to know about sources. That's all. Did you know that Sumerian music and Georgian (not in the USA, in the Caucasus) have the same origns. I read it somewhere at wikipedia. And I found this intersting picture: http://www.iraqwho.com/photo/detail.asp?iType=39&iPic=657. Just imagine in an Islamic country. So strange things are not uncommon in Iraq. I don't feel really comforted with the current article, at all, because a lot lacks. So this article will surely grow.Gilgamesh X 21:22, 4 March 2007 (CST)
Gilgamish I dont know, and i am not an expert in history, but i read that in several places, and i beleive that the situation now with all the sectrian divide make us focused on that out of all the history that we have. it mean nothing if they were christian or they were hindu, as much as it is something that we can get the sources that back it, we can say that one source claim this while this source claim this, and feel free to remove it, my goal is to learn from all of us so that we can have better knowledge of our history.
also i want to run idea by all of you, i will post it on the new Wikiraqi blog --Laith 22:12, 4 March 2007 (CST)
Agreed
Agreed! Latih, Great job on the template too, it's awesome. Akeel 23:30, 5 March 2007 (CST)
Dear Laith, I know I exhausted you by asking you how to make here a table but after a break I watched this page today and I think it's okay. I mean of course the form, use of bold letters etc. I don't think I've to clean this up in a table form. Of course, a lot can and must be add, but I think its forms is okay, what do you think ? Does this site need a new face ? Otherwise, I will add a bit from time to time on this article, but there's no need for tables. Eh, and sorry for my absence last weeks, but I was very busy. Gracias Gilgamesh X 19:02, 19 March 2007 (CDT)

Okay with the site, and I've seen the cooperation between you and aliraqi.com. That's very good ! I hope that I'm gonna contribute some things to the German part of this site (despite my very slow computer). Here you see me taling about the idea of a "Contemporary Iraqi Dictionary" I got a mind for about a year since I started my scientific researches on the Iraqi dialect and its loan words: http://www.haloscan.com/comments/iraqimojo/116132306806047449/#10483. So when you see me using this site, it's just because two (or more) people thought the same :). The second goal I set up (for myself) is to finish the Akkadian / Sumerian portal in the next several weeks on this site, (your okay provided). So what you've seen here until now, was just the tip of the iceberg of knowledge I got in the bag for this site. Gilgamesh X 11:11, 20 March 2007 (CDT)
Gilgamish, It is a pleasure to have the info here, and trust me , you do not my OK here, it is provided without discussion, this website is not mine, its here for all, and for sure it will be your platform, I can not wait for the info here, I have learned so much since this website started,
also Gilgamish, if you have any suggestion please do not hesitate to send it to me, any improvment or anything you like to suggest. --Laith 11:54, 20 March 2007 (CDT)
