مصلاوي

Pronounced [Maslawee]

Meaning : very unique Iraqi dialect/accent. this accent is spoken by the people of Mosul, Nineveh, in the north of Iraq, and the many villages/areas surrounding it. the key in this accent is the almost complete removal of the 'گ' sound and retaining the use of the classical-arabic sound 'ق' also the frequent (but not complete) substitution of the 'ر' sound with the 'غ' (which is almost always changed unless the sound 'ر' comes at the beginning of the word)

example:

  • in Mosul Dialect a Donkey is حماغ (Hmagh), while in Baghdadi it is حمار (Hmar)
  • in Mosul Dialect a Message is رسالة (Risala), in Baghdadi it is 'رسالة' as well.

A slightly-less noticeable change is that the pronunciation of vowels differ slightly from other dialects. For example: the name of the city 'Mosul' is pronounced in Baghdadi Dialect as "Moosil", while natives Maslawi-speakers pronounce it closer to "Mowsel".

This is a lighter-sounding dialect generally very close in pronunciation and vocabulary to classical Arabic. It also shares some traits with other Dialects of Middle/Upper Iraq (i.e. Rawi, Ani, Tikriti, etc)

the way those certain letters are pronounced has been a continuous source of humor on speakers of this dialect, as they are claimed to sound as if twisting their mouths sideways to speak. مصلاوي قيقو قيقو, سبع قملات بزيقو

It should be noted that Maslawi speakers think exactly the same of other accents.

Literal translation: "Maslawi"
