Baghdad
From WikIraqi
Prounciation: bagh-daad
Meaning: given by God
Origin: bagh was the Old Persian word for God (which itself is also Persian). It resembles in that sense to Russian / Slavic бог / bog. Dad is from Persian دادن / daadan which means to give and is similar to Latin dâre or Russian дать / dat'. It is said that on the place of today's Baghdad there was a village with such a name which remained (in contrary to مدينة السلام / medeenat al-salaam / City of Peace).
