In late 1996, aliraqi was born as a experimental website. As many other websites in the period, it consisted of midi files, the first Iraqi real audio clips, a page dedicated to the history of Iraq, a page dedicated to historical Iraqi flags and naturally, an Iraqi photo gallery. Ofcourse, all this resided on a personal webpace folder: homepages.tig.com.au/~mahdi.
As web technology grew (and administrators knowledge of programming expanded) new functionality was added. In late 1997, a guestbook (view) and public BBS was added to the site (along with a ‘redesign’). At this point aliraqi had its first huge burst of popularity as an online magazine with the distribution of ‘Majalat Al-Iraqi’ - a monthly Arabic newspaper.
By early 1998 the need for a domain name was realised with a sponsorship and hosting offer from tabnet.com. aliraqi.com was registered and a new phase of aliraqi had begun.
Some of the members were not happy with the moderators of the Aliraqi that they left to start their own website 4iraqis Website was created
