Pronounced [Betinjan]
Meaning :
A localization of the Arabic word "Bathinjan" (itself loaned from Persian) which means eggplant (aubergine), a pulpy fruit with thick black skin which was very popular with hard-hit Iraqis during the U.N. imposed sanctions after the war in 1991. Its popularity was due to its low cost and its ability to absorb high quantities of cooking oil and seasonings, making it the main dish on most Iraqi tables of the time. it attained a popular (and funny) nickname "" due to its dominance on Iraqi menus.
